Un messaggio di ringraziamento da Londra
Il dott. Gardner, capo delegazione nell'incontro con i manager
londinesi, ringrazia i servizi di salute mentale di Trieste
Riportiamo di seguito la lettera di Tony Gardner, capo delegazione
nel recente incontro con i manager londinesi, indirizzata a Peppe
Dell'Acqua e Roberto Mezzina.
«Dear Peppe and Roberto,
I wanted to write to personally thank you for the marvellous trip
we enjoyed to your services. I have worked in mental health for
over 30 years and have always considered myself a firm believer
in putting service users at the heart of everything we do and
fighting injustice, social exclusion and the 'tyranny of patienthood'
but it was not until my visit to Trieste that I have been able
to see those ideas so firmly embedded in a service. You are all
an inspiration to the rest of us and I am determined that I will
remain an agitator for change in the UK. What really impressed
me was the genuine respect you demonstrate for service users as
fellow citizens and indeed the affection and value you give them
through your practice, behaviour and approach. It is so wonderful
to see, hear and witness genuine socialist principles leading
to emancipation and empowerment in a real sense.
I could talk at great length as the visit was so inspiring and
positive. I am sure that we will wish to be in continued contact
and I have spoken to JJ about my enthusiasm for considering how
we can perhaps have more lengthy exchanges between our organisations.
I believe that our doctors and nurses have so much that they could
learn from you and perhaps there may be some aspects of our work
that may in some way be of help to you.
I know that the people that visited all thanked you as a group
but this is a personal thank you for showing me what can be done
when good people come together to work with fellow citizens to
collectively improve the health of a community. Fantastic!
I also had a great time and very much appreciated your wondeful
hospitality. I was grateful to all your colleagues who took the
time to make the visit so positive. Please thank them for me.
I was also pleased that I was able to recruit new members to the
Manchester United supporters club!! I was also grateful to Mario
whom I found to be most helpful and charming.
Once again, thank you so much for giving me the inspiration to
continue the struggle.....by the way you don't want a job in Cornwall
do you? If only we could get Psychiatrists like you guys.
I look forward to keeping in touch and using your example to reform,
perhaps revolutionize our services
